Project 2 : Site Analysis & Site Response

TASK

In groups, students shall conduct data collection and analysis of the given context, focusing on understanding the qualities of the natural environment and well as the needs of the community.

1. Data Collection’s Content. To “…identify and analyse environmental qualities and contextual needs…” shall mean to record, observe and gather data informing the physical and social dimensions of the context. Students will also identify the intangible qualities together with the physical inventory that shape the character of the site.

A. Physical Content (Natural and Man-made) *non-exhaustive list

• Physical boundaries and measurements

• Natural physical features and character; topographical, geographical and climatic conditions

• Man-made built form, space and their pattern; landscape and architectural characters

• Movement pattern and approach; pedestrian and vehicular

• Sensory survey (five-senses experiences; sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch); views/vistas

B. Social Content (Neighbourhood Community and Activities) *non-exhaustive list

• Land Use characteristics of neighbourhood; development pattern and user-activity zones

• Social background and history

• Community profile; demographics, activities and user experience

• Issues and Potential

2. Data Collection’s Method. Methods used in data collection may include sketches, diagrams, photography, videography, audio recordings, secondary site data from various local authorities and simple interviews focusing on but not limited to these said dimensions, as listed above.

3. Data Analysis. Upon completion of the field work, the tutors will facilitate the studio sessions to organise and present the data (in diagram, drawing and digital model form), leading to analysis of the context within tutorial groups. During the Site Analysis process, students will analyse interpretive themes from the collected data to inform their design narratives which address the environmental qualities and contextual needs of the site.

4. Theme and PLUS component. Based on the analysis, each group will derive a theme as the design response which would frame their presentation. Each group is to identify the PLUS component – the key program – around which their wellness center design will be based.

5. Group Site Analysis Presentation. Each group shall present its respective in-depth analysis, theme and PLUS component in the form of sketches, diagrams, and some preliminary massing ideas.
